It’s the time of the year that I sit down, reflect and do a bit of planning to set the right tone for the new year. I have been busy coming up with my goals for 2022, and while doing so, I’ve put together 10 photography goals for 2022, just for you!

Setting goals in your photography is key to success. That’s why I’ve put these 10 photography goals for 2022 together in hopes that it helps inspire you all just a little bit.

10 Photography Goals for 2022

Goal #1-Learn to shoot in manual!

On the top of the list for my 10 Photography Goals for 2022, just like every year is to learn to shoot in manual mode.

Do you look at your photos and think that they look flat? Do you want to step it up? Do you want to make your photos POP? Then learning to shoot manual is key! I know that you may be nervous, intimidated, or even scared to turn that dial to M, but I promise you that once you take control of your camera, you will never look back.

And I also promise you that it is not as difficult as it may seem! Come join my Beginners Photography Essentials Class, and let me help you master the very most important skill that you can master as a photographer!

Goal #2-Print your photos!

Gone are the days of printing every single photo you take. Really, you probably print very few of your photos. Well, next on the 10 photography goals for 2022 needs to be to print your photos monthly! At the end of each month, take a minute to look back at what you’ve shot.

Find your favorites and have them printed. It doesn’t matter if it’s 2 or 25 images; print your photos, frame them and be proud. Then at the end of the year, you can also look back to see how far your photography has come!

Goal #3-Avoid spending money on more gear!

Let this year be the year you don’t stress having bigger and better equipment. Focus on learning how to take the best photos with the gear that you’ve got. Remember the saying…a great photographer can take a fantastic photo with average equipment.

Goal #4-Find a community!

I can’t stress this one enough. Number 4 on my 10 photography goals for 2022 is to find a community. Having a supportive community is not only fun but will help you grow as a photographer. Whether it’s a Facebook Group like my Learn Photography with Dena group or another resource, add finding a community to your to-do list.

Goal #5-Decide your intentions for your photography!

Goal #5-Decide if you want to go pro or if it’s a hobby! Setting this goal early on can make things easier. Do you want to use your photography to capture your kid’s activities and your lives? Or do you want to use your photography as a business? If you said the latter, make 2022 your year to go professional.

Goal #6-Find a photography project!

If you want to make sure to keep your camera in your hands this year, then find a photography challenge. I am putting on a great Project 52 again this year.  Come join us and see how this project can really push your photography!

Goal #7-Organize your photos!

January is the time to get everything organized, so you start your year off right. Why not add your photos to your organization list? I’ve put together some great tips on the basics of getting your images together. You can check it out here.

Goal #8-Enter a photography contest!

I’ve had 2 of my students enter photography contests this year, and they both placed! And one even had their photo added to a calendar. Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone is essential in helping you as a photographer grow. It doesn’t matter if you come in first or don’t even place. It’s all about growing!

Goal #9-Be on the other side of the camera!

Let this year be the year you are the subject. Getting your photo professionally taken is not only good for business; everyone needs a good headshot, but it’s a great way to see how your clients or subjects feel during your shots. It can help you learn what to do and not do during your sessions.

Goal #10-Create a photography ‘bucket list’!

I’ve been a photographer for over twenty years, and my bucket list is constantly changing. I scratch one thing off and add another. It helps push your photography and prevents you from stagnating as a photographer.

That’s why #10 on my 10 photography goals for 2022 is to create a photography bucket list. Sit down with a blank piece of paper and a pen and start writing. Then as the year goes by, see how many things you can cross off the list.
